Provider Information

Pencilbrook is an energy and water efficiency consultancy, headquartered in Boston, MA.  Principals are Mick Fiato, Mike Lints, Sc.D. and Ron Northcutt

The water audit program architecture and methodology is derived from analytic software, also built by Lints and Fiato, that models and disaggregates energy consumption. These DIY energy audit programs were licensed by energy utilities for the use by their residential customers.

Fiato and Lints have many years of experience in the energy and water efficiency industry. They have designed and implemented many audit programs that analyze energy and water uses. Clients included electric and gas utilities, state and local governments, municipal water suppliers and large customers.

Ron Northcutt, software and web developer, is the partner responsible for Waterwatch© web content - design and implementation.  Ron's skills were acquired by his work in IT and communications technology .

John Burke, the Pencilbrook business development mentor, has years of experience of leading similar initiatives for a variety of ventures, that offered leading edge solutions - from web-based reverse auctions, to automated vendor referencing, and IT outsourcing.

In addition to proprietary analytic programs, Pencilbrook principals created several residential energy use models for other clients and employers.  Consulting assignments include energy and water efficiency projects for US and offshore energy utilities, water suppliers, consultants and service providers.  Notable projects include the following:

  • Managed end-use surveys of commercial customers to provide data for customer research.

  • Developed and managed an award-winning, community-based, demand management program in Wisconsin;

  • Developed on-site energy audits programs for commercial and residential customers of many energy utilities in New England, New York, the Mid-Atlantic states; the Midwest and California.

  • Analysis of thermal loads at wastewater treatment facilities.

  • Developed detailed electric load model for multiple dispersed facilities and performed conceptual design for alternate power production technologies for a regional water authority.

  • Analyzed cost-reduction plans for sewage treatment plant.

  • Formulated mathematical models of energy price volatility and capacity values in a regional power pool, for a global energy company that purchased 2000 MW of fossil assets in the region.

  • Evaluated technology options for small-scale cogeneration at multiple college and university campuses in New York State.

  • Business development and client liaison for energy information portals, e-commerce sites; and online shopping sites, where residential and small business customers can comparison shop for energy supply.
